United Airlines is asking its pilots to take time off in May because of delays in receiving new planes that the airline ordered from Boeing, which is struggling with production due to manufacturing problems. A United spokesperson said Monday that the offer is voluntary. Almost all of the shortfall consists of Boeing 737 Max planes, including a new, larger model. United CEO Scott Kirby is one of several airline executives who have called out problems at Boeing and sought a meeting with Boeing directors. Shares of Boeing Co. fell 2%, while United Airlines Holdings was up less than 1% in midday trading Monday.

Ed Pierson said he'd deliberately made sure the plane wasn't a 737 Max prior to booking. WASHINGTON (AP) — The new chief of the Federal Aviation Administration says the agency will use more people to monitor aircraft manufacturing and hold Boeing accountable for any violations of safety regulations. FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker is expected to face a barrage of questions Tuesday about FAA oversight of the company since a door panel blew off a Boeing 737 Max 9 jetliner over Oregon last month. Separately, investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to release a preliminary report on the Jan. 5 incident as early as Tuesday. After the incident on the Alaska jet, the FAA grounded most Max 9s for three weeks until panels called door plugs could be inspected. FAA also said it won't let Boeing increase the production rate of new Max jets until it is satisfied with the company's safety procedures.

The question we need to ask is: Why wouldn’t an airline use all of an aircraft’s emergency exits? Others, such as emergency exits, are more opaque to travelers. Federal regulators on Wednesday cleared the way for Boeing 737 Max 9 jets to fly again — but also said they would put new limits on production of the troubled planes. The Federal Aviation Administration grounded about 170 Max 9 planes on Jan. 6 after a body panel detached from an Alaska Airlines Max 9 minutes after the flight took off from Portland, Ore., leaving a gaping hole in the side of the jet. On Wednesday, the agency approved a set of inspection and maintenance procedures and said airlines could resume flying the jets once the checks were complete. The process includes requiring airlines to inspect certain bolts and fasteners and to re-torque fasteners on the panel, known as a door plug, which is placed where an emergency exit door would be if a jet had more seats. United Airlines said that it would begin inspecting its 79 Max 9 planes under the new guidelines and that it expected to start using them again on flights on Sunday.

The move came on the same day that a key senator indicated that Congress will join the scrutiny of Boeing. The United Airlines CEO says he is “disappointed” in ongoing manufacturing problems at Boeing that have led to the grounding of dozens of United jetliners, and the airline will consider alternatives to buying a future, larger version of the Boeing 737 Max. United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said Tuesday that Boeing needs “real action” to restore its previous reputation for quality. United has a standing order for Max 10 jets, a larger version of the Max line. The grounding of the Max 9 jets is likely to further complicate Boeing's drive to get the new models approved. Doing without the Max 10 probably means United won't grow as fast as it had hoped, Kirby added.

The panel that blew out of an Alaska Airlines jetliner this month was manufactured in Malaysia by Boeing’s leading supplier, the head of the agency investigating the incident said Wednesday. The officials indicated that their separate investigations of Boeing and the accident are in the early stages. Boeing said CEO David Calhoun visited the Wichita factory of Spirit AeroSystems, which makes a large part of the fuselage on Boeing Max jets and installs the part that came off an Alaska Airlines jetliner.
